Youth Services Assistant

Maxfield Public Library is seeking a part-time Youth Services Assistant to work 10-14 scheduled hours per week. The Youth Services Assistant is responsible for assisting the Youth Services Librarian with children’s events such as storytime, music and movement, and larger family events. They are also responsible for helping to shelve books, prepare crafts, and create bulletin boards. 

Responsibilities:

  • Checks materials in and out
  • Facilitates Storytime and/or Music and Movement when the Youth Services Librarian is out
  • Prepares crafts
  • Creates bulletin boards
  • Assists the youth services librarian with larger events
  • Assists patrons with answering questions and locating and obtaining materials
  • Assists patrons with copying, faxing, scanning, and other tech services
  • Answers telephone at circulation desk
  • Organizes books for shelving
  • Shelves materials
  • Straightens, cleans, and reads shelves
  • Collects money for fines and fees
  • Assists as needed with general operation of library services and programs
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • At least 2 years of experience working with the public, preferably in a library setting
  • Experience working with children. Experience with children under five is preferred
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Knowledge of library services, practices, and procedures preferred
  • Ability and desire to serve and communicate effectively with the public
  • Basic knowledge of computers and technology
  • A bachelor’s degree or library experience is preferred but not required

Starting wage is $19.14/hour 
Wednesday 10-3 and Thursday 10-3. At least one Saturday (10-2) per month is required.
